Each 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month Wally now organises excursions by covered car with couple and coach by the Poperingse country, this is certainly do a must. Abele seems to be a forgotten border community, nevertheless it has a lot of places worth seeing. Local owners of catering establishments have started the Plokkersroute because Abele is very folkloristic. The route (17 km) will impassion you. You can do it by bike, by bus or by covered wagon. You are taken from one beautiful place to another, each of them with its own history and its own meaning. Centrally, there’s the Helleketelbos, this is a relic of a large Atlantic oak wood of which the pine-trees later on were used to make hop-poles. The wood has a relaxing function, many people come to have a walk in the peaceful nature where all paths are indicated. From Poperinge’s highest point (60m) near to the Katteman the “helling” (slope) descends to the hollow or “ketel”. In a meadow nearby, you will find the famous fairy house, a relic of a burnt down homestead. Around the Helleketelbos you have a splendid panoramic view of the hills of West Flanders (Katsberg, Zwarte Berg, Rode Berg, Kemmelberg) and of the polder landscape. You can take a walk or tour in a covered wagon, you can have a good and cheap meal and a nice drink. These are the Plokkersroute’s tourist trump cards!
